How a Technical YouTube Video made me The Smartest Man On The Planet

Ok, “smartest man on the planet” is a slight exaggeration, but it did save me from the following: hours of expletives, losing my mechanical pride, and looking like an angry child in front of my wife.
You see, I have a burned-out headlight on my VW. I thought, “Headlight— I’ve got this, but I better check YouTube for a bit of how-to action.” With a quick search of “how to change a VW headlight,” I was off and running with 36 results.

Not only did I find great tutorials, but I talked myself out of changing the light myself. After hearing “securing ring” and “try not to break it,” I decided to visit a professional. Why? A: I didn’t want to screw it up. B: Five minutes in YouTube tutorial-land actually equals one hour in my garage, not to mention the drive to the auto parts store. Oh, and don’t forget the trip back to the parts store after I bring home the wrong bulb. C: I didn’t want to screw it up.

One trip to my local mechanic later, I now have a brand new headlight and my sanity. Sure, I’m out a few bucks, but the video gave me the insight to make an informed decision—the right decision for me. But something else happened on this YouTube journey. I also discovered that many manufacturers of bulbs and “how to channels” had related videos. This is where I had my epiphany: why don’t more businesses have videos like this? One might argue that it would hurt business if Matt’s Garage showed you how to change a bulb… or would it? Maybe it would actually build instant credibility for Matt’s Garage. Maybe Matt’s Garage would become your go-to for ALL mechanical advice, and ultimately the ONLY place you would even think of taking your automobile. I don’t think it would hurt the business of Matt’s Garage; I believe it would separate Matt’s Garage from all the others, and greatly increase Matt’s business!
A few questions to ask yourself about your business:

• Does my business have a YouTube page or other platform to host video?
• Have I taken steps to establish my business as an expert resource?
• If a consumer was searching for my business, could they find it in the realm of video?
• Did you know that video production is not as expensive as you think?
