Five Steps to Prepare For Your First Modeling Job

So, you’ve landed your first modeling gig.  How prepared are you?  Do you know what to wear?  How about what to bring?  I’m sure you know exactly everything to bring with you, right?  If you’re like most new talent, you may have a good idea, but may still have a few questions.   This article will help you prepare yourself for your first gig.

Step 1: Know how you’re expected to arrive: with or without makeup, wardrobe, etc.
Step 2: Arrive prepared to be an actor.  Modeling is never just about what you look like, it’s also about the part you’re being asked to play.
Step 3: Be courageous enough to look rediculous.  You’ll feel pretty silly doing some of the things photographers need you to do in a shoot, but it’s not about you.  It’s about what the shoot’s trying to accomplish.  Trust the process.  If a photographer intentionally makes you look rediculous, without reason, then feel justified in not accepting any more work from that person.
Step 4: Be aware that photo shoots can be a bit chaotic.  Photographers, art directors and others involved may not have time to chat or take the extra time necessary to be more polite.  Pay attention and be ready when you’re called for makeup or to be on set.  Also, keep noises to a minimum.
Step 5: You’re very important!  You are vital to the whole process, even if you feel as you’re pulled along, like a herd of cattle.  A good model makes the shoot special; a poor model makes the shoot much more work for everyone involved.

The main things to remember are just be prepared.  Shoots are never going to go exactly as planned, so expect a few wildcards to be thrown your way.  What sets a good model and a poor model apart is their attitude and willingness to adapt.

Keep these few pointers in mind and you’ll be on your way to great success!
